The Tour
Limonaie Tour is a walk designed to take you on a journey of discovery through the lemon groves of Gargnano, their history, and what they still represent today as a historical, architectural, and cultural heritage to be preserved and promoted.
The walk will take you to discover the most significant places of citrus cultivation in the Garda area and visit some private lemon groves, which are still active and productive today. The experience will end with a tasting of local products at the shop of the “Terre & Sapori” Agricultural Cooperative.
The Lemon Houses
The arrival of lemons on Lake Garda dates back to the end of the 1200s, when San Francesco d'Assisi founded a Franciscan convent in Gargnano. Over the centuries, in order to increase the cultivation of these typically Mediterranean fruits and to protect them from the harsh winter temperatures, the gardeners of Lake Garda created monumental masonry greenhouses that are unique in the world: the LIMONAIE. Even today, the lemon gardens characterize the landscape of the western shore of Lake Garda, the northernmost place in the world for the cultivation of citrus fruits. "Limonaie Tour" is a walk designed to lead you to discover the lemon houses of Gargnano, their history and what they still represent today as a historical-landscape, architectural and cultural heritage to be preserved and valued.
